Miscellaneous Information
William was born on 10 July 1917 at Toronto, Ontario. His parents were both born in Ontario, his father in Barrie who worked as a painter and his mother in Valentia. The schools he attended were: Fern Avenue Public School, 1922-1931 and Parkdale Collegiate 1931-1937, both in Toronto. His sport interests were baseball, hockey and swimming. William worked as a Sales Clerk for Gordon Mackay, Toronto from 1937 until enlistment on 14 October 1940. |
William embarked from Canada for the U.K. on 19 May 1941, arriving at 3PRC on 1 July 1941. He was at 1.S.S. 7 July 1941, 20 OTU on 7 October 1941 and 101 Squadron 1 May 1942. He was later reposted to 101 Squadron on 18 March 1943. Having finished his first tour of 30 Ops and been awarded the D.F.C. he had been posted as Chief Signal Officer in charge of wireless. This didn’t prevent him from flying however and his urge to get back in the air soon had him on ops again, unbeknown to his parents who thought him safely on the ground. Sadly William was to lose his life on 22 June 1943 from 101 Squadron |
