Miscellaneous Information
Francis was born on 27 February 1917 at Fermoy, Cork, Ireland, where his parents had a bakery. Both parents had died by late 1944, his mother on 6 May 1941 and his father, a Stationary engineer, on 12 November 1944. He had four brothers James, Joseph, Thomas and Michael. He also had two more brothers, R/81445 W/O Henry (Harry) Augustine Sheehan who was killed in Bomber Command on 13 May 1943 and was the first of the brothers to die. He was a WOp/AG flying from Scampton (https://losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/121102/). Then his married brother R/172051 Flt Sgt Edward Fanahan Sheehan was killed on 28 April 1944, also in Bomber Command, 51 Sqn (https://losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/225352/). He was never to see his baby son who was born shortly after his death. He was married to Maureen Sheena (née Roberts). Francis attended St. Patrick’s school, Vancouver and also Sexsmith School and Vancouver High School. He spent three months working as a Pantry Man for CPR and enlisted on 10 February 1940. |
After training Francis embarked from New York for the U.K. on 23 November 1942, arriving at 3 PRC on 1 December. He then proceeded to 28 OTU 2 February 1943, 1656 CU on 20 April 1943 and 460 Squadron on 25 May 1943. Francis then sadly lost his life on 2 October 1943. |
