Reason for Loss | Intercepted at 02.05hrs by a night-fighter flown by Oblt Friedrich Graeff Stab 1/NJG 4. During the attack the Lancaster slipped into cloud cover and visual contact was lost. A few minutes later the Lancaster re-emerged from cloud and collided with the night-fighter. The Lancaster exploded, badly damaging the Bf110-G2. Graeff was badly injured (he lost an eye) but managed to bale out but his two crew were not so fortunate: Uhz Heinrich Koehler & Ofw Paul Scheurmann were both killed when the Bf110 impacted at Wigneghies. The Lancaster crashed between Quivy & Solesmes at Fontaine Au Tertre to the East of Cambrai. Graeff survived the war but did not add any further victories to his tally. |
