Miscellaneous Information
Known as Roly. He flew 23 operations. |
Joinec as an apprentice at RAF Halton in 1933 from age 16. His service record from his time at Halton records that he was a good trumpeter in marching band. After his 18th birthday he was posted to 66 Squadron at RAF Duxford, a Fighter Command squadron as a Fitter II with rank AC1. A year later he was promoted to LAC. In spring 1938 he was posted to 45 Squadron in Egypt (a bomber squadron). In March 1939 he returned to England to undertake pilot training. He also received observer training, meaning that he could serve in any crew position. He completed his operational trtaining with 16 OTU before being posted to 106 Squadron at RAF Finningley and then to 49 Squadron at RAF Scampton where he flew his first operation on 4 Jun 1940 as WOp/AG. |
When home on leave in July he bought a motorcycle and had it shipped to Lincoln, although it was damaged in transit. He was still working on the repairs when he was killed. |

Operation | Ferry to nearby RAF Dunholme Lodge, to put the aircraft out of sight of any enemy intruders. Dunholme Lodge was verged by woodland into which roadways had been cut to alow the aircraft to be hidden by the trees. |
