Miscellaneous Information
John was born on 15 December 1917 in South River, Ontario. His father, who worked as a lumber broker, died in 1945. His mother was born in Sundridge, Ontario, Parry Sound, his father in South River. John had four brothers, Allan, Reginald, Douglas and Robert, and two sisters Yvonne and Kathleen. There were two other siblings who had died, Mavis in 1920 and Francis in 1928. The schools John attended were South River Public 1924-1931 (Entrance) and continued 1931-1935 ( Junior Matric). Then Peterborough Collegiate 1935-1936 (Senior Matric). He also attended Normal School 1936-1937. His sport interest was mainly hockey where he played in the junior Leagues of South Rivers and All Saints but also played softball and enjoyed swimming. John’s hobbies were Canadian history and the radio. He did a little farming when not in school. |
John originally enlisted 4 June 1937. Embarked for the U.K. 5 March 1944, 3 PRC 15 March 1944, 2 (0) AFU 4 April 1944, 30 OTU 9 May 1944, 11 Base 29 July 1944 and 101 Squadron 4 October 1944. Sadly John was to lose his life one month later on 4 November 1944. |
There is a Cenotaph for him in St. John’s Anglican Cemetery at Eagle Lake, Parry Sound. |
