Miscellaneous Information
On 26 March 1942 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the Avro factory at Yeadon. During this visit two aircraft were named after the Royals. R5548 was named "Elizabeth", and this aircraft R5489 was named "George". When the latter was delivered to 44 Sqn, they already had a "G" for George (R5732), so it was allocated callsign "X" instead. However, after the sad demise of "G" a few days prior, the aircraft was re-coded back to KM-G for George to match its Royal name. In a further tragedy, it also crashed a few days later and so never flew on operations as "G". It is for this reason that most sources quote this aircraft as "X", although strictly speaking it was "G" at the time of its demise. |
On the strength of 418 Sqn, according to CWGC records |
