Reason for Loss | Set upon by two Spitfires, although it has since been suggested that it may have been two Hurricanes from 17 Squadron flown by Plt Off Jack Ross (P3894) and Sgt George Steward (P3027). The aircraft landed safely and was repaired at Stradishall. A Board of Enquiry found that the Hampden had fired the wrong flare colours for the day in question to identify itself as 'friendly'. It is said that the CO was so upset by the incident that he went to visit 17 Squadron with several photographs of Hampdens to make sure they didn't make the same mistake again! |
