Miscellaneous Information
Five of the crew were kille din the crash. Jozef Fusniak (air gunner) and Jan Sadowski (WOp) were injured, the latter badly. Fusniak fashioned a shelter for Sadowski to protect him from the worst effects of the weather before going off in search of help. It is said that he followed fox footprints in the snow to lead him to small village of Cray. Sadly, the weather prevented the search party from finding Sadowski for two days, by which time he had died from the combined effects of his injuries and exposure. Fusniak returned to flying duties after his ordeal only to be shot down during an operation against Duisburg. Again, he was the only survivor and although he attempted to evade capture, he was detained and spent the remainder of the war as a PoW. |
