Miscellaneous Information
Joseph was born on 18 May 1918 at Cuervo, New Mexico, USA. His father was born in Chandler, Texas and was a blacksmith and his mother (deceased) was born in Franklin County, Alabama. He had a brother James and a married sister Mrs. Opal Burnett Harvey. There were also two young half sisters Peggy and Anna. A third sister Lillie D. had died in infancy. The schools he attended were Fort Sumner, New Mexico (Public) 1924-1933 and also Fort Sumner, 1933-1937 (grade 12). The sports he enjoyed were boxing, golf, swimming, skating and bowling and his hobby was photography. Between 1937 and 1940 Joseph worked as a professional prize fighter. He then had several jobs in quick succession: During 1940 he worked as a bar tender for M. Ratcliff at Mesa Rica, New Mexico, then as a miner, also during 1940, for J. Brassi at Camp Bevanda, also in New Mexico. He was then working for B. L. Hall in El Paso and then at Bon Hall Bar, Texas during 1940-1941 as a bartender again. |
Joseph enlisted (No Oath) on 16 October1941- while the US was still neutral. He lived in America until he enlisted. When he had finished his training he embarked from Canada and arrived in the U.K. at 3PRC on 30 July 1942. He then went to 7 AGS 15 September 1942 and was at 101 Squadron on 6 October 1942. Sadly Joseph was to lose his life from 101 Squadron on 5 January 1943 |
