Thomas was born at Toronto, Ontario on 2 March 1917. His father, who was unable to work at the time of Thomas's enlistment, was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA and his mother was born in Ireland. She died in 1937. He had three sisters. Medora, Janet and another whose married name was Smith. The schools he attended were Frankland, 1922-1930 and Danford Technical, 1930-1934 (Industrial Electrical). He also attended Danford Tech, night school classes in Electricity. His sport interests were baseball, hockey and rugby. William worked as Service Manager at Sangamo Electric Co. Ltd motor division in Leaside, Ontario from 1935 until 1942 when he enlisted. Enlisting on 20 May 1942 and having completed his training, he embarked from Halifax on 27 May 1943 for the U.K. He arrived at 3PRC on 5 June 1943, 3(0)AFU 10 August 1943, 17 OTU 7 September 1943, 51 Base 15 December 1943 and 9 Squadron on 19 May 1944. Sadly on 31 July 1944 Thomas was to lose his life. |
