Miscellaneous Information
| Poem written by his mother after his death, a line from which became his epitaph: To Ian. I see you now; those piercing sensitive eyes, That generous mouth, that kindliness and love That radiated from the skies To me, his Mother, Who adored and loved as only Mothers can. Those sons were born to die for others And make the world a better cleaner clan Of mortals - destined for the aftermath, The peace plan (they call it). I see you now - a babe with golden hair. Mischief lurking in eyes, and everywhere An impish look of "devil may care". The world is full of thrills And who would dare to spoil my dream? There is NO danger it would seem. I see you now, as ever full of fire But the small body wracked with pain And the desire To run and jump and play, curbed In a spasm of agony. Oh! God that I shall see the day When sound in limb again You'll romp and play And fall in love again with life And all that's gay. A youth maturing every day Experience past has made of him A sterner clay Of youth and man, to face the future unafraid. His happy school days past, the Friends he made All tell of sparkling, bubbling friendships, paved With eagerness to serve his fellow men. War bursts like Hell upon an outraged world And all the pettiness of man is flung asunder In one vast endeavour to kill and plunder The hosts of evil, which have so outraged mankind And darkened the windows of the soul and mind. I see you now like lion caged Pacing the room, your youth and ardour raged They will not call me up "Why don't they want me now" The eagerness to serve, the thickly puckered brow Is blindly raging at the tardiness to show He's keen - he's mad to go. The day arrives, he steps aboard the train His eyes are glowing; hand outstretched, in vain We feel the tears that ought to flow. His happiness is absolute - his face aglow And we try to share his happiness - and go. I hear him now, recounting all he's done The Sargent's Mess - they're fine chaps every one. The food is "wizard" - Port is 3d a glass The barmaid's pretty and, "I made a pass" And every station as in turn he mentions His ardour and his story lengthens. Crusaders they are as any knights who wore the CrossI They climb into their bombers, careless of death and loss, For evil must be stamped by sacrifice and toil; His body lies in Belgium's soil.
