Miscellaneous Information
John was born on 9 February 1913 in Montreal, the son of Frederick George deCourcy O’Grady and Helen Mabel O’Grady (née Lawes), of Montreal. His father had been born in Stratford, Ontario and had worked as a Manufacturer’s Agent and his mother in Montreal. Both parents were deceased by the time of his enlistment, having died within three weeks of one another in 1928. His sister Helen Mary deCourcy was listed as his next of kin and lived in New York. He had two other sisters, Edith Faith deCourcy and also Catherine deCourcy who died in 1916. He also had a brother, Frederick deCourcy. The schools he attended were St.Leo’s Academy 1920-1927 (General course) and Loyola College High School 1927-1929 (2 years High). His sport interests were golf, tennis and swimming. John worked on the Montreal Stock Exchange as a Bond Broker between 1929-1940 including time as a Curb Trader for A.E.Ames & Co., Stock Brokers for two years. |
He enlisted on 8 November 1940 and after training embarked from Canada for the U.K. on 28 February 1942. Arriving at 3 PRC on 10 March 1942 he went on to 7 AGS 30 May 1942, 14 OTU 2 June 1942, 214 Sqn 8 September 1942, 12 OTU 25 June 1943, and 617 Squadron on 16 August 1943. He lost his life three months later. |
