Born 5 Jan 1913. He had initially enlisted in the Territorial Army in September 1940 and after the bombing of Glasgow transferred to the RAF in March 1941. He went to Canada for his training as a Pilot, having passed out the RAF had decided it had enough trained Pilots so he remustered as a Navigator, returning to England in September 1942. He was at 9 O(AFU) Penrhos & to 19 OTU at Forres(later Kinloss). |

Reason for Loss | Shot down by a night-fighter (Hptm Wilhelm Herget, 1./NJG1) and crashed 0130 at the hamlet of Hatenboer (Limburg) 3 km SW of Roermond, Holland. Five crew killed, two prisoner of war. The exact crash site has now been identified and it is hoped that it may be excavated in the near future and that F/Sgt. Gates's remains may be located and given a proper burial. It is also hoped that staff from the University of Glasgow, from which Sgt. Mooney graduated, may be involved in the excavation work. |
