Miscellaneous Information
| Born 18 April 1922 in Northern Ireland. Resided at 47, Montalt Road, Coventry. Employed Standard Motor Co. Ltd., Coventry. |
| Robert Montgomery was born in Aston, Birmingham but studied at Sligo Grammar School, in Connaught, Northern Ireland. He was a success in rugby and received the award of a velvet cap. When he finished school, he started playing football for an Irish club, Portadown. He proved himself as a centre-forward and surprised Billy Hampson, the Leeds United manager, with his skills. He signed a contract on 8 September 1938, when he only sixteen years old. He played for the club’s Reserve Team and also won a Yorkshire Football League runner-up medal in the 1938-39 season. He joined Coventry City as a war-time guest. He was sent to Canada, where he received training as a pilot. Subsequently he went to Georgia U.S.A. where he qualified and received his wings, after which he began to fly Lancaster bombers with 49 Squadron from RAF Fiskerton near Lincoln. He took part in many operational flights over enemy, and enemy-occupied territory, as a Sergeant pilot. He was commissioned a few months before he was shot down at 00:57 on 27th April 1944 and crashed near Bere, nineteen kilometres south of Ligny. He died on the spot at the age of 22. |
