Miscellaneous Information
Nicholas was born on 5 December 1913 at Viscount, Saskatchewan. His parents were both born in Austria but had been living in Poland (their surname was originally Melnyk). They emigrated to Canada in 1911. His father had been a factory worker. Sadly his mother had died in 1916 when he was only three years old and he was sent to live with his mother’s sister Mary Sezurko, in Plunkett. His father had moved away to St. Catherines and worked in a munitions factory. He had a sister Mary who was training to be a nurse and three brothers Stephen, John and Joseph. He went to the school in Plunkett 1920-1927 and attained grade 8 followed by Plunkett High , 1927-1931 (grade 12). The sports he engaged in were: baseball, hockey, golf and shooting and his hobby was photo enlarging. Nicholas held various jobs during 1931-1933. He then worked as a clerk at Lanigan Hotel 1933-1935; as a Grocery clerk 1935-1936; as a parts-man and book keeper at Lanigan garage 1936-1938 and finally as a Service man at Lone Star Auto Electric 1938 1942. |
He enlisted on 30 January 1942. After training, Nicholas was sent to the U.K. where he arrived in March 1943 and then went on to 9 (0) AFU on 22 March. He was at 14 OTU on 5 May 1943, 1654 CU. 29 July 1943. and 49 Squadron on 15 September 1943. Nicholas was to lose his life on 11 April 1944. |
