Miscellaneous Information
His hobbies included prospecting, rugby, baseball, hockey, boxing, hunting, swimming and rowing. His father was a plumber. He had four brothers- William, Albert, Wallace and Paul (William was killed in action in 1942 over Germany, the same year Samuel joined the RCAF) and may have been the reason Samuel joined the RCAF himself. He also had two sisters: Ruth and Elenore. |
He had worked as a miner, a truck owner, a winter fisherman, a garage worker and a prospector. |
He enlisted at #6 mobile recruiting in Geraldton, Ontario on 30 September 1942. On his enlistment papers he stated the reason for doing so was that "[he] thought [he] been a spectator of this war as long as [his] self respect would permit". |
His training took place as follows: Sept 30th, 1942– Winnipeg Oct-28th to Jan 10th, 1943- Brandon, Manitoba January 10th, 1943 to March 25th, 1943- Winnipeg March 26th to May 1st, 1943- Paulson Manitoba May 2nd, 1943 to July 23rd, 1943- Saskatoon Sask July 23rd, 1943 to April 7th, 1944 Calgary Alberta April 8th, 1944 to June 2nd, 1944- Lethbridge Alberta June 3rd, 1944 to June 25th, 1944- Lachine Quebec He was then posted overseas on 25 June 1944 and arrived in England on 3 July 1944. He then passed through 86 OTU and then 82 OTU. |
