Miscellaneous Information
James was born at Bluevale, in Huron County, Ontario on 7 July 1921. Both parents were born at Lucknow, Ontario and his father was a farmer. (His mother’s second name is actually Rutherford, but is usually shortened to Ruth). He had brothers John and Ernest and sisters Lorene, Fern and Yvonne. His school is shown as U.S.S.12 W. Wauanash, Lucknow. 1927-1934 (West Wauanash County). James worked in farming- for M. Campbell, Ripley 1934-1935, then W.J. Irwin, Lucknow, 1935-1937. He then went home and worked for himself at Lucknow, Bush Cutting, between 1937-1938 and was then farming for James Forrester from 1938 onwards until enlistment. The sports he enjoyed were hockey and baseball, and woodworking was his hobby. |
After enlisting on 10 September 1942 and undergoing initial training, James then embarked from Halifax on 22 October 1943 for the U.K. He arrived at 3PRC on 31 October 1943 then went on to 17 OTU 16 November 1943, 51 Base 29 February 1944, 1661 CU 27 March 1944 and 207 Squadron on 25 May 1944. It was from there on 22 June 1944 that James was to sadly lose his life. |
A poem entitled June 22 1944 was written about this crew by the Hon. John Ross Matheson, a judge and MP, and one of the designers of the Canadian flag. Please see image for the full poem. |
