Miscellaneous Information
Charles was born on 11 January 1915 at Outremont, P.Q. Both parents were born at Montreal and his father was deceased by the time of Charles's enlistment. He had a brother Douglas Byrd, and five sisters: Dorothy, Grace, Ann, Ruth, and Ethelda, who were all married. A much younger sister, Myrtle, had sadly died in 1911. The schools Charles attended were: Alfred Joyce, Primary, 1921-1928, Montreal. Strathcona Academy , Outremont, Quebec 1928-1930 and McGill university 1938-1939 for night classes on English Grammar. He also undertook a correspondence course in Accounting 1935-1936. He enjoyed all sports and could drive a car. Between 1930-1932 he was unemployed but from 1932 onwards he was working as an office clerk for paint manufactures in Montreal. |
Charles enlisted on 17 July 1942 and after training was posted to the U.K. He embarked from Halifax on 30 March 1944, arriving at 3 RCAF (PRC) on 8 April 1944, 1(0)AFU 2 May 1944, 28 OTU 6 June 1944 and 166 Squadron on 21 October 1944. Sadly Charles and the rest of the crew all lost their lives on 4 December 1944. |
