| His father, Shipwright James William Lupton, of HM Dockyard was killed 27 May 1915 when HMS Princess Irene an Auxiliary Minelayer exploded off the coast of Sheerness whilst being loaded with mines. 352 men were killed: 273 Officers and men of the ship and 76 Dockyard men, only one man aboard survived. 9 year old Hilda Johnson died as she was stuck by debris in her Uncles garden in Grain village. The explosion was so huge that fragments were found 11 miles away in Detling. |
| His mother Ellen remarried Herbert Pilkington in 1920 in Sheppey, Kent. They lived at Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire in the 1920s - where Herbert was from. They had two children: Kathleen (1921) and Herbert (1923), both born in Lancashire but by 1939 were living in Ramsgate, Kent. |
