Miscellaneous Information
Norman was born on 25 May 1916 at Cut Knife, Saskatchewan. Both parents were born in Québec, his father, a carpenter/cabinet maker, at Joliet and his mother at St.Alexis. He had four brothers, Clarence, Charles, Elmer and Walter. Walter George, later shown as having died in 1944, had joined the Calgary Highlanders. There were also two married sisters, Irene and Doris. He attended Cut Knife Public School 1922-1928 followed by the High School 1928-1929. These were followed by King Edward High 1929-1930 and then an I.C.S Correspondence course, Montreal 1930-1934, in art, where he studied Magazine Illustrating. Between 1936-1938 Norman attended a Federal School in Minnesota , USA where he studied Commercial Art, then In 1939 he was studying Spanish at Fairview in Vancouver. He enjoyed tennis, swimming, bowling, softball and skating. He was an artist and designer. Norman had various employment over the years beginning with the Ruddy Duker Company in Vancouver where he was a sign painting apprentice between 1931-1935. He then spent 1935-1937 working part time for George Fleming Co. as a designer and for Bridge River Mines as a postmaster’s assistant. After a couple more short jobs he ended at the General Paint Corporation in Vancouver as a Display Manager from 1939-1941. His last year leading to enlistment, 1941-1942, was spent at the Dominion Provincial Youth Training School (for aircrew). |
