Miscellaneous Information
The pilot, 406555 F/S Colin Evan Bayliss, of Perth, Western Australia, survived the incident (his 5th operation) and at the age of 21 became a PoW (PoW No. 27520) in Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf and Stalag IVA Hohnstein. His first pull on the parachute D-ring failed to open it but after removing some securing pins, it deployed correctly. He landed bare-foot in the snow and proceeded to walk for 44 hours until he found a house. The occupants put him in touch with the French underground who provided him with French civilian clothing and assisted him to begin an escape through Spain. He and his escort (Roger Le Neveu) were both arrested near Tours, although it later transpired that Le Neveu was a Gestapo agent. While in Lansdorf Bayliss attemtped an escape in an open-topped railway wagon but was caught. A later, more organised attempt was successful, although he was caught attempting to purchase tarin tickets in Dresden. He returned to Australia after the war and became a highly regarded rheumatologist. He also penned the book "No Flying Without Wings". |
