Reason for Loss | Hit by heavy flak and/or cannon fire from fighter at approx. 0130 hrs at 17,750 feet. Considerable damage caused, starboard inner engine caught fire. Both gunners were wounded. Aircraft went into a steep dive with flames coming from the rear turret. Crew ordered to prepare to jump. A/B (F/O Kidd) and 2nd Pilot (P/O G. Woods) then left the aircraft. Remainder of crew unable to leave. Captain finally manged to pull the aircraft out of dive at 2,000 feet and flew back to England, making a safe landing at Wittering. |
