Nottingham Evening Post - Monday 05 March 1945: £4,800 AWARD Mansfield Widow’s Assize Claim Announcing an award of £4,816 2s. damages to a Mansfield widow, at the Notts. Assizes to-day, Mr. Justice Lewis intimated that assessing the figure, he had disregarded the amount she received for pension. Plaintiff was Mrs. Alice Johnson, of 14, Sandhurst-avenue, Mansfield, who brought a claim against Alfred Hill, trading as John -Hill, Rochdale, for damages in respect of an accident in which her husband, L.A.C. Wallace Johnson, R.A.F., received fatal injuries. Mr. Norman Winning (instructed by Marchant and Co., Mansfield) represented plaintiff, and Mr. Douglas Lowe, of London, defended. The accident happened on January 16th this year. L.A.C. was riding a bicycle along London Road towards Little Haywood, Staffs., when he was knocked down by defendant’s lorry, and died shortly after admission to hospital. Before joining the Forces he was employed by a Manchester firm as a travelling salesman, earning £6 7s. 6d. weekly, plus commission. A letter from the firm was produced in court and stated that he had prospects of advancement to £5OO a year. The widow is left with four children, including twins aged five years. |
