Reason for Loss | Coned by search lights, but evaded these by 'corkscrewing'. Later intercepted by a night-fighter crewed by Hauptmann Gerhard Raht, Unteroffizier Heinemann (BF) & Unteroffizier Rohlfs-Zoll (BM) of Stab I./NJG 2, who were flying Ju 88 R-2 4R+PK from Châteaudun airfield. The Lancaster exploded on impact at Morienval (Oise) . According to crew member Clive Schwilk, William Worthington died in the initial attack by the night fighter. Three crew baled out but only two, Schwilk and William Flynn survived, and evaded capture. |
