Miscellaneous Information
Born on 13 November 1916 at Coventry. Donald's father, Horace was a research chemist and Donald went to Exeter College in 1934 to read chemistry and graduated with a second class degree in 1938. While an undergraduate he played football and rugby and was a member of the canoe club. Informal records at Exeter say about him “A nice friendly person. A keen man about college”. After graduating he went into industry and was employed by Courtaulds Ltd. in the research laboratory. Although in a reserved occupation he volunteered for service with the RAF and enlisted on 11 August 1941. He married Valerie May Kirby in December 1941, residing at 69 Kenilworth Road, the couple had no children. In the RAF he trained as an observer/navigator in England and across the Atlantic. He was asked to transfer to chemical research in the Army but turned down this request. Donald was promoted to a Pilot Officer on 1 September 1942, previously having the service number, 1534150. His award was promulgated The London Gazette on 27 October 1942. |
