Miscellaneous Information
Survived but received severe burns to the face and hands, which the Germans refused to treat. The next morning he was taken to nearby woods and shot in the head, killing him instantly. He was initially buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Königsech, Rheine and reinterred on 25 March 1947, during which a pathology report confirmed a small arms bullet hole to his skull. Two of the four Germans charged with his murder were found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. |
There are discrepancies in the various accounts, since if he was shot the following morning, his date of death would have been 17th January, whereas CWGC state 16th. |
