Reason for Loss | Pilot abandoned operation owing to a fire caused by a transformer in the Gee equipment. Bomb load partly jettisoned at Douai at 20:47hrs. The order to abandon was given at 20:45 due to profuse smoke accumulation in the cockpit. Bomb aimer and mid-upper gunner complied but the smoke rapidly dissipated once the escape hatches were opened and the other crew members remained with the aircraft and made a safe return to base. The two who baled out were lost and are commemorated on the Runnymede memorial |
