Miscellaneous Information
James was born on 24 September 1916 at Cranbrook British Columbia, the son of James Haley and Florence Haley (née Wood), of Cranbrook. Both parents were born in Leeds, Yorkshire, his father being deceased by the time of James's enlistment. James had a sister, Kathleen, who became his next of kin, as listed on his enlistment papers. The schools he attended were Cranbrook Central 1922-1930. (Standard) and Cranbrook High 1930-1935. He attained High School grade 9, Junior and part Senior Matric. The hobbies he most enjoyed were hunting and fishing and in sports, swimming, hockey and track and field events. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts. In 1937 he worked for C.P.R. Express Company as a Warehouseman and then became a Mill worker with Cranbrook Lock and door Company where he stayed until enlistment on 15 April 1940. |
After initial training he embarked for the U.K., arriving at 3 PRC on 2 March 1941. That was followed by 13 OTU on 15 March 1941, 27 OTU on 12 July 1941 then 150 Squadron on 3 October 1941. |
