Miscellaneous Information
Born in Surrey on 30 July 1923. His father was a civil servant with the Scottish Education Department. Alfred as educated at Colet Court School and at St. Paul’s School from 1937 to 1941, where he was Secretary of the Cycling Club and boxed as a heavyweight. He was a pack leader in the Boy Scouts in 1940. He entered Worcester College Oxford on 10 October 1941 as an RAF cadet, and completed a short course over two terms. He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the RAFVR on 12 February 1943 and was promoted to Flying Officer on 12 August the same year. |
A stained glass window was given in his memory by his father to St. Mary’s Church, Cuddington, and he is commemorated on the war memorials at St. Paul’s School, and at Worcester College, Oxford. |

Reason for Loss | Forced to attack at low level due to cloud over the target area and came under heavy fire from German anti-aircraft guns. Probably a victim of flak, crashing at Fresnay-le-Vieux, south of Caen. The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered by advancing troops one month after the crash. |
