Miscellaneous Information
Date of birth 15th August 1920. Known as Ted. He resided at 58 Rugby Road, Binley and attended Bablake School for four years from 1932 to 1936, after winning a scholarship. He was employed by Alfred Herbert Ltd., of Coventry in the Gear cutting Department until enlisting in December 1938. He was gazetted as Pilot Officer on 11 February 1944 and a Flight Lieutenant after his death on 1 January 1945. During his service he was also Mentioned in Despatches. The December 1944 edition of 'The Wheatleyan' stated "We greatly regret to hear that Flight Lieut. W. Grantham has been killed in air operations. We extend our deepest sympathies to his mother". His name may be found on the Bablake School Memorial. |
His brother, Roland (Ron) Grantham, also wanted to serve in Bomber Command but was not admitted due to poor eyesight. He celebrated his 100th birthday in 2018. |
