Miscellaneous Information
Vernon was born at Edmonton, Alberta on 12 March 1925. His father was born in Cheshire, England and was the superintendent of Mount Pleasant Cemetery and his mother was born at Bury, Lancashire, England. He had a brother, Ronald who was at 8 OTU, Greenwood, Nova Scotia. He attended the Alendale school between 1931-1936 and then King Edward 1936-1940 (grade 9). The sports Vernon enjoyed were baseball and hockey. He also enjoyed typing, sheet metal work and photography. He worked at Blythe Studio as a Photographer between 1940 and 1941, for Aircraft Repair Ltd as a sheet metal worker 1941-1942, and then as a Driver for Page Cleaners in 1942 |
Vernon enlisted on 26 October 1942 and after training was sent to the U.K. He embarked from Halifax on 26 August 1943, arriving at 3PRC on 2 September 1943. He was then at 16 OTU 14 September 1943, 51 Base 5 January 1944 and 630 Squadron on 3 May 1944. Sadly this young nineteen year old was to lose his life very shortly afterwards on 22 May 1944. |
