F/Sgt. J.C.Jarrett, the sole survivor, returned in to Thin-le-Moutier in the year 2000 to present an engraved plaque to the village. It bears the names of the crew and remembers also the priest and choirboy who were killed when the wall of the church later collapsed due to the explosion. It also thanks the villagers for their help and comfort. |

Reason for Loss | Turned back before reaching the target, then lost power from the starboard inner engine and the order to feather the unit was given. Moments later the remaining three engines failed and though the crew were ordered to abandon, only the Air Bomber and Rear Gunner managed to get clear before the Lancaster fell at 22:48 near Signy-l'Abbaye (Ardennes), 23 km WSW of Charleville-Mezieres. The rear gunner was killed when he hit the ground. The bomb aimer hit the ground 20 seconds after his chute opened. He was hurt but survived, the villagers assisted him and he was eventually flown back to UK 460 Squadron and then back to RAAF 467 Squadron at Waddington. Six of the crew were killed |
