Miscellaneous Information
His father was a carpenter but had died by the time of the 1939 census. Ellis was the youngest of 4 sons: Walter H. (born 1907), Alec Francis (born 1909) Leonard G. (born 1911) and Ellis R. (born 1916). They were all born in Dorset and on 1911 census Harry and Caroline are living in Piddletrenthide with Walter and Alec and a lodger. Ellis worked as a motor mechanic before enlisting. |

Western Gazette 4 February 1944: DEATH OF SERGT. ER GAWLER RAF A flight engineer in the RAF lost his life on active service in this country. Youngest son of the late Mr H Gawler and Mrs Gawler of Home Lea, Merley near Wimborne and formerly of Holwell near Sherborne. Aged 27 and single he attended Wimborne Council School, after which he was employed at Redhill Garage by Mr G Ray. Joined RAF about 3 years ago. He had seen about 2 years service in Canada as a fitter. His death sincerely regretted by a wide circle whose sympathy has been expressed to his mother and relatives. Funeral took place on Saturday at Canford, first part of the service held in the Parish Church. Rev AW White officiated and Mrs Arnold played the organ. Coffin covered with the Union Jack. Chief mourners included Mrs H Gawler (mother), Mr Leonard Gawler (brother), Mr & Mrs A Gawler of Holwell, Mr & Mrs F Chapman of Morden (uncles and aunts) and Mr Trevor Gawler , Holwell (cousin). Mr. Ray and a number of the deceased’s fellow employees at the Redhill Garage and parishioners also attended. Beautiful flowers included tributes from a sergeants mess, RAF; Mr Ray and employees. Mrs Gawler and family wish to thank the many kind friends for their expressions of sympathy and floral tribures. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. FC Douch, The Square, Wimborne. |

Reason for Loss | Engine failure at 20,000 feet over Wales. The aircraft descended into thick cloud and immediately suffered severe icing which caused a wing to fold and come off, crashing into the tail-place causing the Halifax to disintegrate in the air |
