Reason for Loss | Shot down while returning to base by an Intruder flown by Ofw Wilhelm Beier, 1./NJG2 and ditched off Cromer, Norfolk. All were injured during the attack and Sgt Fitch died within minutes of the Hampden entering the sea. Sgt Flint rescued his badly wounded navigator and he was subsequently awarded the George Medal and the DFM in recognition of his devotion to his crew and his outstanding airmanship. Sadly, Sgt Beningfield, died from his injuries. |
