Reason for Loss | Pilot t/o with wireless operator for night circuit practice. At 2120, while banking, the plane flew into a lightning pole, crashed onto the flare path and burst into flames. Both crew members managed to scramble clear but the seven airmen on flare path duty (including AC1 Firth) were not so fortunate. All were rushed to RAF hospital Ely but none survived their injuries. |
