Robert was born on 25 December 1917 at Elmira, New York. His father was a Linotype Operator who was born in Guelph, Ontario and his mother was born in London , England. He attended the John Ross Robertson Public School in New York 1927-1932 where he attained Grade 8 and then the Northern Vocational School 1932-1934 for his Junior Matric. Robert worked at the George G McLeod Publishing Company as a shipping clerk and proof reader 1934-1935, then as a Salesman in a Jewellers. At the Victoria Hotel as a switchboard operator/relief clerk and as a clerk at the Prince George Hotel. The sports he took part in were rugby, hockey and baseball. |
He enlisted on 27 December 1940 and after initial training embarked for U.K. on 8 January 1942. After 3 PRC 21 January 1942, he was at 7 AGS 7 March 1942 and 16 OTU 5 May 1942. |
He was an American Citizen who enlisted in Canada while the US was neutral. |
