Miscellaneous Information
| James was born at Toronto, Ontario on 31 October 1916. His father was born in Montreal and worked as a Manufacturer’s Agent dealing in textiles, and his mother was born at Toronto. He had three brothers Luke, William and Arthur and sisters Irene, Evelyn, Elizabeth, Corrine and Bernice.These are the schools he attended: Sacred Heart 1922–1925, St.Augustine 1925-1928, St. Augustine High School 1928-1929 (all in Montreal and all were General courses). He then went to St. Patrick High 1929 -1931 (Maths and Science) and D’Arcy McGee High School 1931-1932 (Maths and Science). He ended with the Canadian Electronic Industy in Toronto 1938-1939 (wireless). James enjoyed his sport. Mainly tennis but also running, handball, softball, table tennis, hockey etc.and his hobby was photography. He worked for his father in Montreal 1932-1933, both in the office and selling, and then from 1934 onwards worked at the Commercial Credit Corporation, Toronto (Bookkeeping /accountancy). |
| He enlisted on 6 June 1940 and after initial training he embarked for the U.K. arriving on 7 February 1941. He went on to 16 OTU 15 February 1941, and 106 Squadron on 3 May 1941. Sadly James lost his life on 22 August 1941. |
| His brother, J/9574 F/O William Jerome Erly was also killed on the Strength of Bomber Command, flying as Navigator with 158 Squadron. He lost his life on 27 September 1943. |
