| His father Harold was a shipbroker and Freemason, they lived and married in London, Bowdon and later in Kent, where John was born. John was educated at Brambletye School, East Grinstead, Sussex and Radley College, Oxfordshire. |
| He was articled to Chartered Accountants after leaving Radley. When the war began he enlisted in the Royal Artillery and was Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant (Service Number 109128) 5 December 1939. Lieutenant John Andrew Edward RA transferred to the RAF as Pilot Officer (Service Number 51120) 3 February 1943. |
