Miscellaneous Information
F/S Doyle survived the crash and after being captured was handed over to German guards at Veddel Russian PoW camp, who beat him unconscious with a broken chair, threw a bucket of water over him and then, when he recovered enough to move slightly, shot him several times at point blank range. Four PoWs were detailed to bury his body. A matter of days after the incident, on 7 August 1943, the body was recovered and reinterred at Harburg Cemetery by the German authorities, initially marking the grave as an 'unknown airman'. His body was later positively identified by the Allies (although some doubt is cast over the veracity of the examination) and he was moved to Becklingham War Cemetery. The three German guards were not tried for murder since they could not be identified, although it is understood that the German authorities did punish them at the time by sending them to the Russian front. |
