Miscellaneous Information
Phillip was born on 11 November 1919 at Denzil, Saskatchewan. His father was a farmer and both parents were born in the USA. He had three married sisters and two brothers, Mortimer and Milford. Sadly J/20127 F/O Mortimer John Dowd, pilot, lost his life on 26 September 1943, flying with 179 Squadron. He was buried in Malta. Phillip was at school 1926-1935 followed by the High school in Denzil. His sport interests were baseball, hockey and basketball and his hobby was mechanics. Phillip also spent a year at St. Thomas college, North Battleford. |
He enlisted on 15 July 1941 and sadly lost his life on 22 March 1944 from 626 Squadron. |

Reason for Loss | Airborne 18:59 on 22 Mar 1944 from Wickenby to bomb a target in Frankfurt. Outbound, attacked by a night-fighter (Oblt Helmut Lent, Stab/NJG 3, airborne from Stade, Ju 88 G-6, 21:35) near Bielefeld and crashed about 300 m NE of "Obernfelder Dampfziegelei" in Blasheim, 3 km WSW of Lübbecke. The force of the crash, coupled with the fire that followed, totally destroyed the Lancaster. All seven crew killed |
