He attended St. Joseph’s School and Freeport High School, 1934-1938 and Kansas City Art Institute, 1938-1939. He spent a couple of months working as a clerk in summer 1938 before returning to school and then worked as a skilled labourer with the Micro Switch Company. 1939-1940. Raymond enlisted on 30 September 1940, before the Pearl Barbour attack, and therefore while the United States was still neutral. In doing so he risked his citizenship, although it is clear from his enlistment papers that he did not swear and Oath to the King. After initial training Raymond embarked for the U.K. on 18 June 1941, arriving at 3PRC on 17 July 1941. He was then at 16 OTU 30 August 1941 and 408 Squadron on 26 December 1941.
