Miscellaneous Information
Jim was born at St.Catherines, Ontario on 7 November 1923. His father worked as a Foreman and was born at Fruitland, Ontario and his mother was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. There was also a baby brother born in 1922 but he had died when only two days old. He attended St. Catherines Public school in Ontario 1928-1936 and then went on to St Catherines College between 1936 and 1938. After that he went to the night school 1940-1941 where he studied Machine Shop skills. His sport interests were baseball, swimming and roller skating. Jim worked at Commonwealth Electric in Welland, Ontario as a Lathe operator between 1938-1940. He then worked at St. Catherines Steel, where he carried out maintenance work and was an apprentice tool maker between 1940-1943. |
On 1 April 1943 he enlisted and after training was posted to the U.K. He embarked from Halifax on 5 March 1944 arriving at 3 RCAF (PRC) on 15 March 1944, 17 OTU on 21 March 1944, 51 Base 14 June 1944, 106 Sqn. on 13 September 1944 and finally 207 Squadron on 16 December 1944. Sadly, Jim was to lose his life the following year on 21 February 1945. |
