Miscellaneous Information
John was born in Dublin on 14 July 1911. Both parents also born Ireland. His father was retired and his mother deceased at the time he enlisted. His father died in 1942. They lived in Merritt, B.C. He had four siblings, sisters Mary and Alice and two brothers Michael and Patrick. John went to the following schools: St. Stanislais, Coalmont, 1918-1926 (Entrance), Merritt High School 1926-1928 ((University Entrance). He had a variety of jobs including: Mill Sampler at Granley M&S. Co. 1928, an electrician’s helper at Coalmont Collieries 1928-1939, a store clerk and a pipe fitter in a mine. The sports John was interested in were tennis, skating, hockey and baseball. |
John enlisted on 14 January 1942 and after training was sent to the U.K. Embarking from Canada on 11 December 1942 he arrived at 3PRC on 18 December. He went on to 22 OTU on 2 February 1943, 428 Sqn 8 April 1943 and arrived at 166 Squadron on 22 April 1943. He was killed just six days later. |
