Miscellaneous Information
George was born on 7 December 1912 at North Vancouver. His father was born in Sutton, Surrey, England and was a retired ship and freight broker and his mother was born at Joplin, Missouri, USA. He had several siblings: sisters, Edith, Anna Louise and Alice and brothers Donald Kennedy, R. Bruce and Arthur Campbell, who was a PoW. Arthur returned safely to Canada in July 1945. A younger brother Charles Campbell had died in 1917. The schools he attended were North Star Public 1919-1921, Kingsley private 1921-1926, Lincoln Portland 1926-1927 and London, England 1927-1928. He then went to Sprott Shaw (commercial) 1928-1929. He was a Lumber man and worked in the business for about ten years including the Lumber Mills in Vancouver at Sitka Spruce Lumber Company.The sports he enjoyed were rugby, skiing, swimming and tennis and amateur photography and developing, was his hobby. George had served in the 6th Field Coy. R.C.E. 1931-1932 and also in the 1st Battn. Seaforth Highlanders 1932-1935. |
He enlisted on 28 February 1941 and after initial training embarked from Canada on 1 May 1942. He arrived at 3 PRC on 14 May 1942, 10 (0)AFU 6 June 1942, 19 OTU on 14 July 1942, 1654 CU 1 October 1942, 44 Sqn 23 December 1942. There are no more clear movements but does mention RAF Scampton 25 March 1943. George sadly lost his life from 617 Squadron on 16 September 1943. |
