| 1260976 Sgt Peter Arthur Charles McDermott DFM (Pilot) wrote in his personal diary: "My next operation on 28th December was a honey. There was an artificial rubber plant (Buna) at Hüls, just a bit northwest of Krefeld. It had been attacked by each of the groups in turn, but without success. It was now 5 Group’s turn, and we had a very accurate model to study at briefing. One of the troubles was that there was a very realistic dummy target a few miles from it that had been collecting much of the previous efforts. It was a moonlight night – ideal for both pin-pointing and nightfighter action – and our navigation (by Paddy McClenaghan standing in for Jack Boucher) was spot on. In the last seconds of our bombing run, there was the most almighty explosion on the target and we added our bombs to it. We were carrying a camera (not a frequent happening in those days) and got a good picture. Gus Walker was so delighted with our efforts on Hüls that he arranged a night off with liberty buses to Nottingham for us all. Sadly, Tom Barnett, my roommate, was shot down on this raid. I had a ‘Kriegie’ card from him later to say that poor Buster Cheesman, his Wop/AG, had ‘bought it’ but that the others were OK - some relief, anyway. I wrote to his (Barnett's) English girlfriend immediately, only to receive a heart-broken letter from her father to say that she had just died from TB. War can be doubly rotten at times". |
