Op 1 juni 1942 om 22.58 ur vertrok Handley Page Hampden AT191, een tweemotorige bommen-werper, van het Canadese 408 Squadron vanaf de thuisbasis Balderton naar het doel Essen. Boven het IJsselmeer werd het toestel neergeschoten door een Duitse nachtjager. De Hampden stortte bij deze locatie in het IJsselmeer neer, waarbij de vier bemanningsleden om het leven kwamen.
Translation "On 1/06/1942, Handley Page Hampden AT191 of 408 RCAF Sqn flew a mission to Essen. Above the Ijsselmeer it was attacked by a German nightfighter. The Hampden crashed in the Ijsselmeer and 4 crew were killed." |
