Miscellaneous Information
Alfred was born on 24 February 1921 at Virden, Manitoba. His father, a registrar, was born in Stratford, Ontario and his mother in Winnipeg. The schools he attended were: Virden Public 1927- 1935 (general), followed by Virden Collegiate and Boissevain Collegiate, 1935-1939 ( general). He then spent 1939-1940 at Brandon College taking second year Science and at Brandon Tech, Manitoba for another two months between October-December 1940 (mechanics and theory). During this time he worked in a Government Forestry Camp at Boissevain as a student and labourer between July and September 1939 and as a labourer for Hewitson Contractors in Brandon for a further two months. Alfred enlisted on 12 February 1941 and after training was sent to the U.K. He embarked from New York on 8 October 1943 arriving at 3PRC on 17 October. He then went to 2(0) AFU 14 December 1943, 30 OTU 15 February 1944, 11 Base 23 May 1944 and 101 Squadron on 20 July 1944. Alfred sadly lost his life the following month on 30 August 1944. |
