| Memorial Text | On 21/12/1941, Hampden AE151 was part of a formation of 6 aircraft of 106 Squadron RAF tasked to attack several targets in northwestern Germany. An hour after departure, Bomber Command aborted the mission because of dense cloud cover over the target area. The abort message was not received by AE151 and the aircraft flew on to the target Oldenburg. Although hit by flak the crew bombed their target, but the nose of the aircraft was badly damaged. Navigator/ Air Bomber Anthony Carter was killed. Heavily damaged, the crew decided to make an emergency landing and were taken prisoner. |
