DFM Recommentation: "During the period that Sgt. Carr has served in No. 207 Squadron, he has always set a high example to comrades and his discipline, both on the ground and in the air, has been outstandingly good. His record is one of exceptional keenness and efficiency and he has proved himself to be both painstaking and trustworthy and to be a valuable member of his crew. On one night towards the end of June 1942, Sgt. Carr was flying as rear gunner in a Lancaster aircraft detailed to attack Bremen. Shortly after crossing the enemy coast, the aircraft was attacked by a Ju.88. It was primarily due first to the offensive spirit and secondly to the concise and accurate guidance given ny this NCO that the pilot was able to give correcr evasive action resulting in the aircraft being able to carry out its mission successfully and return safely to base without having sustained any damage. On several occasions, Sgt. Carr has contributed laregly to the safe return of the aircraft in which he has flown and at all times he has shown level-headedness, cool judegment and courage in the face of difficulties and danger. 26 September 1942 |
