Miscellaneous Information
James was born on 20 September 1916 at Toronto, Ontario. Both parents were born in Chicago, Illinois, USA and his father was a manager. He had a married brother Richard Hall Burton. He attended Whitney Public school, 1922-1929 followed by Jarvis Collegiate Institute 1929-1933. He then went on to Shop Practice at Northern Vocational between 1933 and 1934 and then took night classes in English and Maths at the Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, during 1939-1940. Workwise he was at the Flexible Shaft Co. in Toronto as an electrical mechanic from 1934-1939 and then as a Salesman for the Link Belt Co. 1936-1941 before returning home to Canada. He had no work back home and enlisted on 19 March 1942. The sports he had taken part in were hockey, rugby and swimming. |
After enlistment and initial training James was posted to the U.K. and arrived at 3PRC on 5 June 1943. He then continued to 7(P) AFU 27 July 1943, 11 (P) AFU 30 November 1943, 30 OTU 14 March 1944, 11 Base 30 May 1944 and 166 Squadron on 6 August 1944. James sadly lost his life on 26 October 1944 whilst on a mine laying operation in Heligoland. It was presumed that the crew all lost their lives at sea. |
